Welcome to My Oasis Therapeutic Alternative Provision (TAP)

Professionalism, having the highest expectations for our students and developing strong relationships with each and every one of them are at the heart of everything we do at My Oasis

My Oasis Therapeutic Alternative Provision

Situated in the center of Standish, My Oasis is a Therapeutic Alternative Provision (TAP) which supports young people of secondary school age with social, emotional and mental health needs (SEMH), as well as young people with a diagnosis of Special Educational Needs or Disabilities (SEND). Young people are referred to us through partner Local Authorities and from mainstream schools primarily located within Wigan, Chorley, Preston and South Ribble. We subsequently offer a broad and balanced curriculum to vulnerable students who have often been disengaged in education for a long time.

At My Oasis we use trauma-informed and specialist therapeutic approaches to re-engage students in their education. Being one of the only provisions in the area that merge health services with education. We are passionate about giving our young people the skills they need to make a valuable contribution to society and to fulfil their dreams. At My Oasis we recognise how education is not a ‘one size fits all’ model therefore we carefully tailor our provision to meet every student’s individual needs.

About us

At My Oasis, we support young people between the ages of 11-16 years through providing a personalised provision and access to evidence-based interventions to facilitate reintegration into mainstream education. We use a variety of therapeutic approaches to re-engage students, with young people having access to psychotherapy and counselling provided by qualified therapists, as well as their own designated mentor to act as a guide throughout their placement at My Oasis.

Many years ago, Charlotte Lowe developed a Mental Health Model for Schools following a recognition of the increased need to provide emotional support to both students and staff within an educational setting. This model has been rolled out successfully across numerous primary and secondary schools situated within Lancashire and South Wales, with multiple articles being published outlining how schools could apply this model in their setting. Charlotte had campaigned tirelessly for years to make changes to young people’s mental health and ensure more support is available for them within an educational setting. This has included setting up a petition to argue for mental health to be taught on the school curriculum, prior to the government making it statutory for Mental Health to be taught within PHSE lessons. In addition, Charlotte argued for the urgent need to recruit more therapists and counsellors within schools before Mental Health Support Teams (MHSTs) were implemented in schools across the country.

After over twenty years of working in health and education, Charlotte has argued for the need to merge the two systems to ensure a young person’s needs can be met holistically. The Tiered Support Services offered to schools and the development of My Oasis TAP have therefore been established because of this. My Oasis offers placements to students on a short and long-term basis to aid with their reintegration back into mainstream school. Through the academic and specialist therapeutic support offered to young people, we aim to overcome any barriers and re-engage students in their learning through providing them with a personalised package of support and access to evidence-based psychotherapies and counselling. Interventions delivered are based on recent developments and academic research in psychology and neuroscience, with support being offered not only during a student’s placement with us but also during their transition back into mainstream.

We believe that supporting students in overcoming any mental health difficulties they might be experiencing, facilitating the development of healthy coping strategies and building confidence in terms of their educational progress will increase the likelihood of successful reintegration. In addition, we aim to cultivate a healthy and productive lifestyle in students, grow personal resilience, as well as facilitate the development the skills and values required to become responsible members of society.

My Oasis has now grown to consist of a dedicated team of professionals who all share the same passion, values and compassion towards the students we support, ensuring each young person referred to us feels valued and part of the My Oasis family. We have now passed all the quality assurance checks and are registered with both Lancashire and Wigan Local Authorities, being recognised as an alternative educational provision which makes a positive difference to the lives of students on placement with us. We have recently applied to Ofsted and are currently in the process of become registered as an Independent Alternative Provision School.

Targeted Interventions

The tiered approach we adhere to at My Oasis is not necessarily based on how complex the difficulties are that a young person is presenting with, but it is more so a stepped care approach to supporting students in terms of their emotional health and facilitate re-engagement in their education.
