My Oasis

Specialist SEND Support

At My Oasis we specialise in supporting neurodiverse young people, especially those with a diagnosis of autism spectrum condition (ASC) or attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). Following an accurate assessment of need, a personalised learning plan (PLP) is developed for each student to ensure a carefully planned and tailored program of support.

Alongside the academic support, therapeutic support is offered to students in various ways to help support them around their mental health and wellbeing, any social or communication difficulties, academic or learning support, struggles around any sensory needs, as well as helping students learn self-regulation skills and healthy coping strategies to manage within a mainstream environment. Students attending My Oasis have access to specialist health staff, with a multi-professional approach ensuring each young person’s needs are treated holistically.

Evidence-based Therapies

Examples of the therapeutic support we offer at My Oasis to young people diagnosed with SEND include:

  • Comprehensive assessments are offered at My Oasis to establish the needs of young people in various ways, such as mental health and behavioural assessments, sensory profiling assessments, as well as those
  • Skills-based sessions to help young people cope by developing any key skills they may be struggling with, such as social and communication skills, problem-solving or self-regulation skills, having strategies to manage sensory overload, as well as developing skills to manage change and uncertainty which many young people diagnosed with SEND can struggle with.
  • Specialist psychotherapies to help support a young person’s mental health and wellbeing - Therapeutic Support
  • The use creative approaches, such as using Sports, Art and/or Music therapy to help young people learn ways to express themselves and how they are feeling. We recognise the therapeutic benefit of being around nature and with animals, which is why many of the programmes available at My Oasis make use of these to help re-engage a student in their learning.
  • Given how many young people with a diagnosis of SEND can often struggle to express how they are feeling, the development of emotional literacy skills is woven throughout all packages of support offered at My Oasis.
  • Intensive therapeutic SEND support is offered at My Oasis around key times of difficulties, such as transitions, exam preparation and as well as understanding their diagnosis through psychoeducation like mentioned above.

As mentioned within the Curriculum Overview, academic support is provided to young people with a diagnosis of SEND by providing specialist teachers who have vast experience of working within the education sector. At My Oasis teaching staff make use of creative approaches and teachers provided differentiated learning opportunities to help re-engage a young person in their learning, providing materials and contexts for learning appropriate to each young person’s interests and abilities.

Various approaches are used both in and outside the classroom to support students diagnosed with SEND, including but not limited to:

  • Small teaching groups with a maximum of students in each lesson.
  • High staff ratio and specialist learning support within the classroom for young people diagnosed with SEND.
  • Individual mentoring from staff and volunteers.
  • Engagement and enrichment activities focused on the interests and motivation of the learner.
  • Transitional and support around helping students reintegrate back into mainstream school, a more specialist provision or further education, training or employment.

Through working with mainstream schools and delivering various ASDAN qualifications and courses, students with SEND have access to a broad and balanced curriculum which meets the needs of all learners. Monitoring of the effectiveness of our SEND provision is carried out in various ways through discussions with the senior leadership team and governing body at My Oasis.
