Therapeutic Support

At My Oasis developing strong relationships with our students is at the heart of what we do. We recognise how young people learn about who they are and the world by forming relationships with people and the things around them. We know that the quality of a young person’s relationships with significant adults is vital to their healthy development, considerably impacting on a young person’s emotional health and wellbeing in many ways. This is why all staff at My Oasis are trained to work to a trauma-informed approach, ensuring they are caring and consistent in their approach towards young people and subsequently facilitating the development of trusting relationships.

At My Oasis we recognise how no one therapeutic approach ‘fits all’, due to how multifaceted we are as human beings and due to the complex needs young people often present with. We therefore offer a range of evidence-based psychotherapies and counselling approaches to ensure that we can meet the needs of all young people referred to us. Suggestions as to which therapeutic treatment approach might be most appropriate will be provided following a student’s comprehensive mental health and behavioural assessments. Our interventions and the therapies employed are based on research and the findings of developmental and neurodevelopmental psychology.

Alongside the general wellbeing and mentoring sessions which all students receive, specialist psychotherapies are available upon request. These psychotherapies are in line with NICE clinical guidance and those treatment approaches provided within Child and Adolescent Mental Health Services (CAMHS). However, due to restrictions and lack of resources within CAMHS, My Oasis provides a range of psychotherapies and alternative therapies which are not readily available within current mental health services.

Examples of the psychotherapies and counselling approaches used within My Oasis are outlined below:

  • Cognitive-behavioural therapy ( commonly referred to as CBT). We also offer trauma-focused CBT within the provision.
  • Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing (EMDR)
  • Art Therapy
  • Person-Centred Counselling
  • Solution-Focused Brief Therapy (SFBT)
  • Mindfulness Based Cognitive Therapy (MBCT)
  • Music Therapy
  • Compassionate based approaches, such as compassionate mind therapy
  • Alternative therapies, such as Reiki and Craniosacral therapy
  • Equine and small animal therapy*

* At My Oasis we recognise the huge therapeutic benefit of working with animals and/or in nature. We therefore work alongside external providers to be able to offer these therapeutic approaches, however unfortunately due to lack of space we cannot accommodate our own animals living within the provision at this current time.

Skills-Based Groups

Following the assessment process, a developmental mapping plan is provided for each young person which helps us identify those students who may benefit from support around their emotional or social development. We recognise many young people may display challenging behaviours due to struggling with their mental health, though some students’ needs could present in a different way. We therefore provide skills-based groups to support young people in learning key self-regulation strategies, as well as facilitate the development of social and communication skills, problem-solving and skills around the development of healthy relationships as just some examples.

At My Oasis we recognise that when a young person’s life is interrupted by anxiety or fear, their thinking brain will be disengaged, and they will be unable to learn as we know that how we feel is closely linked to how we behave and that emotions are key to the learning process.

Psychoeducation

As mentioned within the curriculum section, we educate all young people to understand their mental health with coping strategies, as well as teaching the principles of CBT across the whole curriculum through RHSE lessons. This ensures all young people who attend with us at My Oasis feel more equipped to cope with the challenges of life. For example, we provide psychoeducation to young people on the neuroscience behind their brains and physiological reactions to help them to understand why they may react the way they do to events.
