Careers Education

At My Oasis, we place great value on ensuring every student is well prepared for their next steps beyond our provision. The Career’s Programme at My Oasis consists of various activities, lessons, schemes of learning, guidance and support to students with a comprehensive Preparing for Adulthood (PFA) programme for those students diagnosed with SEND.

Our aim is to help young people develop the knowledge, skills, confidence and resilience they need to become successful members of society. We understand that many of our students require additional support to recognise their strengths, explore opportunities and build ambition. Through personalised guidance and meaningful experiences, we therefore help them see what is possible for their future.

Our Approach

Careers education is embedded throughout our academic and therapeutic curriculum. We provide structured opportunities for students to:

  • Understand their interests, talents and aspirations.
  • Learn about different career pathways and explore which might be the best one for them.
  • Develop employability and life skills.
  • Build independence and confidence.
  • Make informed decisions about further education, training or employment
  • Build awareness around charitable work and through our citizenship programme
  • Assist students into developing into successful members of society who can thrive within Modern Britain

Preparing for Adulthood (PFA)

Preparation for Adulthood begins early at My Oasis as students begin this programme when they enter KS3, with the programme linking closely with a student’s EHCP outcomes and future career aspirations.

From when students begin with us in Year 7, they are introduced to various activities that promote and develop knowledge and skills in:

  • Self-awareness and Goal setting
  • Teamwork, Social and Communication Skills
  • Problem-Solving
  • Understanding Workplaces and Career Pathways
  • Financial, Media and Digital Awareness
  • Community Participation and Citizenship

As students move into KS4, this develops into more focused exploration of career routes, qualifications, vocational interests and transition planning. Students are encouraged to complete a skills-based assessment to help them explore further the careers most in line with their skill set and future aspirations.

Vocational Experiences

We believe young people benefit most from encountering real employers and work place environments, which is why we build strong links with local businesses to ensure students have a range of vocational placements available to them.

Students have access to a growing range of experiences, including:

  • visits from external speakers and professionals, including various employers
  • workshops led by training providers and colleges
  • workplace visits
  • work experience and placement opportunities
  • volunteering and community engagement
  • enterprise and project-based learning

These experiences help students connect classroom learning to the wider world, giving them enough experience for them to explore which is the best career path for them.

Personal Guidance

Students receive individual support to plan their futures. This may include:

  • One-to-one careers support and guidance, including visits to colleges and other post-16 educational provisions.
  • Support with college or training applications
  • Assisting students in developing their CV’s and writing personal statements.
  • Interview preparation, interview techniques and role playing when required.
  • Transition meetings with families, external professionals and post-16 educational provisions or workplaces as and when is required.

Our therapeutic team also helps students build the confidence and emotional readiness needed for them to transition into the world of work.

Working with Families

We recognise that parents and carers are key partners in planning successful futures. We keep them informed about options, application processes and transition pathways, and invite them to any reviews and planning meetings.

Our Commitment

We are committed to continually expanding our careers offer, strengthening employer partnerships and increasing opportunities for meaningful encounters with post-16 education and the world of work.

Our ultimate goal is for every student to leave My Oasis with:

  • A clear plan in place regarding their next steps.
  • Improved confidence, social and communication skills.
  • Greater independence and ability to motivate themselves
  • Develop key skills needed to progress and become successful members of society
